THE TRIBBLE WITH BLUE
(REGAL BRAID x POINT OF DIVERGENCE)
Tetraploid, dormant, early-mid season bloomer, 18" scapes (much taller on rebloom), 5.75" blooms, fertile both ways, very strong rebloomer here, picotee edge has 3 colors, ends of petals have narrow gold braid.
$100 for a double fan plant - limited...
Of course, veteran Trekkies will know that the name is a play on one of my favorite Star Trek episodes, "The Trouble With Tribbles", and also plays on the fact that the color of this flower is troublesome..there are mornings when you would swear that it's the next step towards 'blue', then other mornings it's a silvery lavender (still very beautiful though). Finally, there is a tie in with the location of my farm...the stream in back of the farm is called Big Tribble Run.
And then there's the troublesome fact that 95% of the time, TTWB is totally top branched with only 14 buds. I never thought I'd ever introduce a plant with that low of a budcount...but then, in my garden this plant regularly puts out 3 rounds of scapes - this year, some of the plants put out 4 sets. Here in northern WV, the plant was rarely out of bloom from late June until late October. Due to early blooming, the initial scape is usually short at 16" - 18"...later scapes are in the 24" to 26" range. I have seen it with 2 lateral branches and 22 buds but that is very rare. Seedlings from it have good branching and often have broken eyezones (see our seedling posts).
The photo below shows TRIBBLE during rebloom as a 1st year seedling - the early morning light really brought out the violet-blue tones - this is atypical - the lighting has to be just right (plus 3 or 4 planets need to align correctly, too) for this color effect to show up...but when it does...wow!

The dormant foliage is very low, narrow, arching, and dark blue green. TRIBBLE has displayed easy fertility, both ways...the photo below shows the broken eyezone that sometimes appears on TRIBBLE when it reblooms...
Typical bloom habit has TRIBBLE putting up an early scape, then starting another one midway through bloom on the initial scape. There is usually a gap of 7-10 days between bloom ending on the 1st scape and bloom beginning on the 2nd scape...on established plants here, the 2nd set of scapes is followed by a 3rd set. This year, a 2 fan plant of TTWB that was lined out last August sent up a 4th set of scapes in September...many of the 2 fan lineouts (divided and planted in early August) sent up another set of scapes in September and October. Below is a photo of the plant...1st scape is on the left (short at 18") the bloom is on the 2nd, 24" tall set of scapes and the 3rd set is nearing onset of bloom.
My friend Dan Robarts just sent me 3 photos of TRIBBLE when he used it in the greenhouse at The Ohio State Univerity a couple of years ago...thanks, Dan.
In the photo below, BLUE HIPPO is on the left, TRIBBLE is the one in the middle and DESTINED TO SEE is on the right...you can see how light the petal color is on TRIBBLE, compared with the other two.
TRIBBLE showing much more violet than blue in the OSU greenhouse - you can also make out the triple picotee edge on the blooms in this photo...
TRIBBLE SEEDLINGS
Here are a few seedlings that bloomed last year with TRIBBLE as the pollen parent...
CLARITY OF VISION x THE TRIBBLE WITH BLUE
ETCHED EYES x THE TRIBBLE WITH BLUE
(DIGITAL IMAGERY x CRACK OF DAWN) X THE TRIBBLE WITH BLUE - this is a Dan Robarts seedling...
ADENA BABS
(FREQUENT FLIER x IOWA LADY 2) X UNKNOWN (likely an Apricot Sparkles x Frequent Flier seedling).
ADENA BABS will often have some extra segments, especially when the temperatures warm up - here, it's shown as a full segmented double - also note that the pistil and anthers are all available for hybridizing.
Diploid, dormant, early mid season bloomer, 22" scapes, 4.5" blooms, 3 laterals, fertile both ways, very strong rebloomer...sometimes throws extra segments...diamond dusted soft pink with a faint red eyezone...
$50 for a double fan plant
Named after my mom - her sisters and friends often called her "Babs" though her name was Barbara. I owe much of who I am as a person to mom...she was a constant giver of herself to her family and to others and this plant is the same way...it consistently puts up 3 sets of scapes here and this season, after lining the plants out in early August, the majority of the 2 fan divisions put up another, 4th round of scapes.
Clump photo - you can see the 3rd round of scapes coming in the the center of the photo, with first round just ending and second round starting to bloom...
CHARLIE DALE
Diploid, dormant, early mid season bloomer, 22" scape, 4.5" blooms, 2 lateral branches, around 20-22 buds, very strong rebloom here (3 sets of scapes on established plants)...coral red petal color with scarlet eye and slight picotee edge.
$50 for a double fan plant - limited...
Named for my dad, who in many ways was larger than life, CHARLIE DALE is hard to miss in the garden with it's bright coral red petals and vibrant scarlet red eye set off by the strong, yellow-green throat. There's even a picotee edge - and it's a dip!
Thanks to Mike Huben for this photo of CHARLIE DALE blooming in his garden near Boston, MA.

TRIBBLE is awesome. I love the color and edges. I liked it better than Blue Hippo when shown together like that. Way to go!
