It was a 'strange' year for reds here because many of them simply were not red - or at least not the rich saturated scarlet/primary red that I want to hybridize for. However, there certainly were some wonderful seedlings that fit (or at least can be shoehorned) into the 'red' category...these are all 1st year bloom...
MOMENTUM x IT IS FINISHED - big, flat, lusty with a vibrant red eye on a nice tall scape
BELIEF IN VEIN x IT IS FINISHED - another very large bloom at 7" with lighter edges and serrated teeth...
BELLE OF ASHWOOD x IT IS FINISHED - not really a rose pink - more of a light red - either way, it's a very impressive bloom on an undersized plant...
BELLE OF ASHWOOD x IT IS FINISHED - not as interesting as the previous sibling, but a 6" bloom on a 28" scape, 3 laterals, and instant rebloom makes it worthy of my attention...it's easily fertile, too.
GLORY IN RED x BELLE OF ASHWOOD - growing in a very crowded seedling bed, this wonderfully saturated red bloom stood out...it's got the type of color and rolling, relaxed ruffles that I want in my program...I just hope it performs next year - the bracts are in place for 4 laterals (only 2 this year) - I didn't even set a pod on it 'cause I didn't want to take a chance of setting it back - 6.5" blooms, 26" scape...
MISSISSIPPI RED BED BEAUTY x HEARTBEAT OF HEAVEN - I was wondering if HOH would go to reds in the greenhouse a couple of winters ago...MRBB was open, so...it's certainly a different sort of red - 6" blooms on a 24" scape...
MISSISSIPPI RED BED BEAUTY x HEARTBEAT OF HEAVEN - a sibling to the one above, this one is a very clear rose red with a white edge...
SPACECOAST STARBURST x IT IS FINISHED - 6.5" blooms on a 29" scape, 2 laterals, excellent substance and rain resistance...
GLASS BEAD GAME x WIDE AWAKE - once again, not the result I expected from this cross - edges and teeth, yes - reds, no! But I'm not complaining...6" blooms, 26" scape, 2 laterals...
GLASS BEAD GAME x WIDE AWAKE - sib to the one above - Richard Norris likes this one while I prefer the one above...
ASHWOOD HEARTHSIDE x FEAR NOT - 2 saturated reds produced this deep rose red with wide pink edges...and see those spots on the sepals - they are consistent...a couple of the siblings have them on every bloom, too...
LINDA BECK x RED HAT DIVA - RHD is proving to be a much overlooked breeder for me (Richard Norris says the same thing) - this large, 7" bloom with excellent color gives and indication of the breeding potential of RHD when crossed into purples...
